UVEX Spectroscope

UVEX Spectroscope

The UVEX is a “crossed” Czerny-Turner spectroscope optimized for wavelengths from near UV (<350nm) to near IR (1µm).

uvex01

We recommend using the ZWO ASI 533 MMPro Camera with the UVEX spectrograph.

In this article you will find a lot of additional information about UVEX.

It is particularly suitable for Ritchey-Chretien (RC) telescopes up to 400mm in diameter (F/8).

Settings are precise and easily accessible:

  • A multi-turn knob adjusts the focus of the M2 internal mirror.
  • Use the index to set the central wavelength of the spectrum on the camera sensor. A vernier (available for each type of grating) allows you to position the grating precisely at the desired wavelength.

The uvex is supplied with a 600 tr/mm grating blazed at 500nm and an adapter ring for ZWO cameras (other rings for QHY and ATIK cameras are also available as options).

The UVEX spectroscope slit has 6 positions that can be easily changed using a Phillips screwdriver (supplied with the UVEX). Several slit widths are available: 25µm, 50µm, 100µm, 300µm, a 25µm hole and a 3mm hole. Other slits are available as an option and Alpy slits are compatible with UVEX.

A shockproof case is supplied with UVEX. It includes pre-cut slots for safely transporting the spectrograph with its camera, as well as various accessories (additional networks, order filter, tools, etc.).

In the Czerny-Turner set-up, the light enters through the entrance slit and is directed parallel onto the diffraction grating by the collimating mirror. There it is spectrally split and fed to the focussing mirror as parallel beams. This then images the beams, spectrally split onto the detector array. In principle, this represents a mapping of the input slit onto the array or the output slit, whereby spectral splitting also takes place in the parallel beam path using an optical grating.

The angles between the optical elements are used for the design of the spectrometer so that imaging errors can be reduced. If only one common mirror is used for both images, this is referred to as an Ebert set-up.

Crossed Czerny-Turner set-up (Illustration left)

The crossed Czerny-Turner set-up has a better beam path, i.e. a beam path with fewer aberrations towards the target. This crossed beam path also enables more compact spectrometers.

Optionale Grating Module

The UVEX can be used with additional 150 tr/mm, 300 tr/mm, 1200 tr/grating modulmm and 1800 tr/mm gratings, in addition to the 600 tr/mm grating supplied as standard with the UVEX.

Each grating is supplied with:

  • A grating holder (the grating is delivered mounted and adjusted on the grating holder)
  • A box for securely storing your grating on its holder
  • A cap
  • A plastic vernier corresponding to your gratinggrating modul

Grating UVEX 150 l/mm
Grating UVEX 300l/mm
Grating UVEX 1200 l/mm
Grating UVEX 1800 l/mm

Compatible with:

  • UVEX motorized
  • UVEX Spectroscope

UVEX can be used with a wide range of grids. The mesh can be changed in just a few seconds. Coding ensures that the mesh is correctly aligned. The grille holder is supplied with a protective cover.
The UVEX is supplied with a 600 Tr/mm grating blazed at 500 nm, giving a resolving power of R=1700 @ 650 nm. You can supplement your spectroscope with other gratings from 150 to 1800 rpm to achieve resolutions from R=400 to 7000 @ 650 nm.

The Alpy slots are directly compatible with UVEX. You can also use an optical fibre instead of the slit. An order filter can be fitted in the slit holder (to prevent order overlap in the near IR range).

Camera connection

uvex mit kamera

The UVEX can be used with various cameras.
The only restriction is that the camera has a maximum focus position of maximum focus position of 13 mm.
